Crafting Employee Relocation Packages that Win Loyalty

from:

When attempting to lure prospective employees, whether foreign or domestic, there are quite a few things you can do to make sure the employee relocation packages that you choose are suitable for the candidates you seek. While larger corporations are expected to produce rather generous benefits, smaller firms can make a very big impact with a few relatively minor concessions and offers.

Firstly, employee relocation packages differ by being either foreign or domestic. Thought he US is a very large country, there will be no visas to apply for and generally no State Department fuss. Whether your firm is courting young technical wizards or mid-career executives, it's a relatively minor thing to arrange for a moving company or to find temporary lodgings while a new home is found. Often times a company, or more precisely, the professional firm that the company hires to handle employee relocation packages, will also assist in the process of finding a new home if that assistance is needed.

For recruits who are to move from overseas, your company will first have to contact the State Department and arrange for a work visa. This will often require some affidavit or demonstration that there are no qualified candidates state side. Such employee relocation packages must start here, but also very often include a bevy of services designed to ease the transition for the employee and her or his family. This could include English lessons, tours of the new city, job referral for the employee's spouse, assistance with selling or leasing the old residence or even outright purchase of the former abode.

Employees who are considering a move will find the pot that much sweeter if your company has some concrete moving assistance plans that promise to make the move less of a hassle than if they were to simply pick up and move to another state or country. Leaving one's home, especially for a foreign land where the employee, along with his or her family, is likely to stand out.

One inexpensive and very useful component of employee relocation packages is a provision to provide enough time off and opportunities for social interaction. This could take the form of some sort of expatriate club or even just making sure your employees aren't working more than 40 hours per week so they have plenty of time to pursue their own agendas.

Executive candidates do seem to expect all these services and more, so you can only impress them by the quality of services you contract out for. While most professionals in the field are trained and certified by their own trade organization, the Employee Relocation Council, some certainly cater to a higher level of clientèle than others. Employee relocation packages for younger or technical hires can be far less exacting and still be very impressive, as long as they cover all the basics. Either way, spending a bit of money up front is sure to reap future rewards from happy and efficient employees.
