Renegotiating The Move Cost Estimate On Moving Day
Posted by Relocation Specialist on November 21st, 2009 filed in RelocatingOn moving day, when the consumer thinks he is sitting pretty on a pre-negotiated binding moving cost estimate, many movers will make some swift moves to quickly reverse the situation and raise the moving cost. Counting on the consumer’s ignorance of the complex moving regulations, and the mover’s own skill in twisting the regulations in his favor, a scammer can quickly double the cost of the move in the space of a few minutes. Allow me to illustrate my point with the following example taking from the web site of a prominent anti-moving scam organization.
This story was related by a man who was chagrined, after being taken for a ride by moving scammers. He posted his comments on the bulletin board of a prominent anti-moving scam web site. ” I just signed a contract with an internet based mover…. ” he wrote, “The per-lb quote was a bit less than the others, so I went with that.” He then goes on to detail the calamity that followed.
“After packing and loading our stuff the lead moving guy convinced me to sign an alternative estimate based on a fixed weight that was approximately double what other movers estimated it would be and more than double their own estimate..” A crucial point, follows, and was easy to miss in the discussion, but it is very important. “Also, they had the truck 95% LOADED before I signed. “
Just stop for a minute, and consider the significance of the fact that the mover renegotiated the contract when he was 95% but not 100% finished loading. Moving regulations provide that if a moving cost estimate is renegotiated on moving day, it must be done before the mover loads, and before he offers service. Now, it might not hold up in court, but if it ever came to court it would probably take up a significant chunk of court time to consider whether 95 % loaded is loaded or loading, servicing the shipment, or merely starting to service it..
A very very small percentage of householders have the legal knowledge to understand all the intricacies of moving law. Even in a court of law, were a mover to claim he renegotiated the contract before the loading was completed, it would be argued and not so easily determined whether such a procedure could in any way be construed as being compliant with moving regulations.
So as events unfold on moving day, when the mover stops short of completing the loading process, and then asks the householder to agree to a new estimate it seems very official, and in fact has a shred of technical truth in it, and many householders fall for it.
One way to protect yourself from a slick scam move is to hire a local packing company to pack for you. Packing Service Inc. is an honest packing company that for a flat guaranteed fee will pack all your belongings, load them in a truck or container, and provide you with a complete weight list of your goods. Packing Service Inc. is dedicated to fighting moving scam, and provides all their customers with a list of honest interstate shippers.
