Declutter Before The Move Quickly And Effectively With These Simple Ideas
Posted by Relocation Specialist on January 28th, 2010 filed in RelocatingThe deal went through much faster than you thought it would, and now you realize that you will have to quickly declutter before packing! The time you have spent in your house has slowly filled it up with an amazing collection of clutter build-up, and you know that there is no way to take all that clutter build-up with you when you move. How do you declutter before the move? What follows are some suggestions to get your boxes packed with ease! It does not have to be difficult to declutter your house for a move.
1. Do a quick walk-through camera in hand, and photograph larger items that you already know you want gone before moving day. Upload them and list them on Kijiji, Ebay, or Craigslist. Earn some cash from your clutter and empty your rooms of the big items at the same time! Remember not to price them too high and, they will go.
2. Be almost brutal with yourself as to what you really need to pack, and what you can get rid of. Keep the garbage bags, recycle bins, and bags for charity with you as you sort through your clutter room by room. As you work through the clutter build-up, ask yourself if you really need those boxes of craft supplies that you bought on a whim 3 years ago but never opened. Is packing your whole supply of empty margarine containers really necessary? Will you really FINALLY use that car starter kit in the cupboard in your spare room Is that ugly old couch really worth shipping to your lovely new home? If in doubt, chuck it out.
3. Schedule in time to declutter before moving. Unless you want to be going insane the day before moving day, you will need to not delay getting started, and to work hard during the time you have. Set aside large chunks of time (the whole evening, the weekend, etc.) and focus on the task at hand: To minimze the clutter build-up.
4. Work systematically. If you just attack the clutter build-up here and there wherever you feel the desire to work, you won’t be encouraged by the progress. The most effective way to declutter before moving is to complete one area, one room, one person’s clothing, etc., at a time.
5. Don’t fall for the “I’ll deal with it when I unpack” lie. Will you really? Or, will you simply put those boxes full of random “stuff” into the spare room and deal with them four years from now?
6. Hire a baby-sitter to take your children on an outing for the afternoon, or ask a friend to watch them for a few hours. Use this free time well and declutter before moving with no distractions!
A move is perfect opportunity to start with a fresh, uncluttered house.
When you pack, keep that thought in mind and DO NOT pack items that you can’t see yourself ever missing or needing again. That may sound obvious, but if you look around your house at the clutter build-up in your closets, spare room, basement, and/or garage, you are certain to see quite a few things that fit into that category. If you are really serious about your desire to declutter before packing and start your life in your new house with very little clutter, then follow the suggestions above and your Moving Day will run smoother and easier than you would have thought was possible!
