• Assessed Value/ Lump Sum Value: Rather than valuing items by their weight, this type of coverage is based on the total dollar amount of the worth of the goods, based on $1,000 of the depreciated value of the goods. One thing that should stand out right away is the fact that unless you are declaring the full replacement value of the goods (which is actually the last type of coverage, Full Value Protection), you are guaranteed to get less than the full value of any possessions lost or damaged during the moving process.
• Full Value Protection: While you might expect that any type of valuation protection would pay to replace any items that were lost, damaged or destroyed during a move, that isn’t the case. Only Full Value Protection will provide that level of protection for possessions involved in your move. It comes as no surprise that this is the most expensive type of valuation coverage because it represents the highest amount of potential liability for the moving company.
Choosing the Right Type of Valuation Coverage
The decision on what type of valuation coverage to purchase for your move comes down to what type of coverage you can afford and how important it is to be able to replace a damaged item from your move. The base valuation coverage under Declared Value is typically provided as part of your overall moving expenses, making it the least expensive, but it is very unlikely to provide the type of coverage you would want if items like computers, big screen TV’s or either items are damaged during your move. Full Value Protection usually provides the highest level of compensation but is the most expensive to buy.
Before you make your final choice, you should also check with your insurance agent about programs that they may offer, either as separate “riders” for existing policies you already have or as standalone policies. This might save you a fair bit of money on your move.

There are several reasons why packing the moving correctly will become important:
* Money- If you pack a moving truck correctly, you might be able to rent a smaller truck than you first imagined. Since smaller moving trucks often rent out a lower rate, packing the truck correctly can save you money.
* Time- The packing and loading of items is always the process that takes the most time in any move. If you know how to pack the truck correctly, you won’t be wasting time trying to figure out what goes where, and instead can spend that time efficiently loading furniture and boxes where they need to go.
* Stress- Spending the entire move worrying whether your items are loaded correctly or if they’re going to fall and break is nerve-wracking and stressful. Avoid this situation by being confident in the right way to load items.
* Safety- There are actually two kinds of safety involved in packing and loading a moving truck. The first kind of safety is that of you and your fellow packers and movers- loading things in an unstable way can lead to falling items and injuries. Second, and what most people think about, is loading items so that they arrive safely at their destination.
What Are The First Two Things That I Need to Know About Packing a Moving Truck?
The first two things you need to know about packing and loading a moving truck correctly are pretty basic:
* The Plan- You need to have a plan in advance on how you’re going to load the truck. That’s because you’ll want items to come out of your currently place in a way that will make them easy to load in the proper order. Don’t try to “wing it” on Moving Day.
* The Truck- You need to have the correct size of truck to be able to hold all your possessions with just a small amount of extra room to be able to maneuver inside the truck. Having too much room in the truck is a typical mistake- that extra room can cause items to shift and fall during transit.
What Do I Need to Pack a Moving Truck Correctly?
You don’t need a lot of supplies to load the truck correctly. Having rope, heavy twine, furniture pads (you can usually rent them from the same place you rented the truck), mattress pads, a hand truck, a tape measure, and your plan should cover you.
What Are The First Things You Should Load On The Moving Truck?
Your largest and heaviest items should be secured against the cab wall (that’s the wall the separates the driver from the rest of the truck) should be placed in the truck first, secured by rope. Use furniture pads between any two items that might be touching. Secure any lighter items by using heavier items on their opposite sides.
Long items go on next, mostly up on their longest sides or edges. Loading large-sized mattresses (always use mattress pads to prevent ripping and tearing) go up against the side walls next, secured by rope. Other long items to secure include sofas, table tops, long pictures and mirrors.
The rest of the furniture should now go on the truck, arranged neatly and orderly, and up against the sides of the truck where possible. Again, moving pads are your friends here.
Heavy boxes are next on the list, arranged to form rows on the floor of the truck. Be careful to leave room to walk, and don’t stack the heavy boxes high enough to damage the ones on the bottoms. Also, never stack heavy boxes on top lighter ones.
Follow those with your lighter boxes, and finally awkward items that didn’t fall into the other categories, secured with heavy twine and moving blankets.
Following this order should make your move more orderly and keep damage and stress to a minimum.

Packing Pots And Pans

It is also the aspect that takes up most of the time involved with a move. And while we’re busy trying to figure out how to find enough time to get our packing finished, it also begins to dawn on us that some things that some things are more difficult to pack than others.

A good example of packing and the phenomenon of “this is harder than it looks” is trying to get pots and pans from the kitchen ready for the big move. This article provides the basics of getting yours ready quickly, safely and easily.
Here are the basic pots and pans packing tips:
Pots and Pans Packing Tip 1: Get the right materials together.
Fortunately, the first step isn’t difficult. Here’s what you’ll need:
• Medium-sized, sturdy moving boxes
• Packing paper, kraft paper, or in a pinch, newspaper
• Packing tape
• Dark colored, wide-tipped marker
• Biodegradable packing peanuts (optional)
Pots and Pans Packing Tip 2: Prepare your moving boxes.
Take each box and tape the bottom both lengthwise and crosswise along its seam, forming a cross. And while this may seem like a ridiculous reminder, be certain that you have the bottom of the box fully taped and secured before you start putting things in- you’d be surprised by the number of people, under the stress of the move, who forget to do this!
Next you’ll want to prepare the inside of the box. Take the paper and form very loose “balls”- making them too tight will reduce their ability to absorb impact and will also exhaust your paper supply very quickly. You want to be sure that you have at least 1 – 2 inches of paper plus biodegradable packing peanuts to create a cushioning layer at the bottom of each box.
Pots and Pans Packing Tip 3: Loading the pots and lids.
The first thing to keep in mind when loading the pots and lids into the boxes is that pots get nested together in groups of 3, and the lids for the same 3 pots get nested together as well. Then you’ll place the group of 3 pots and the group of 3 lids together in the same box. This way, when you’re unpacking, you won’t have to tear through all the kitchen boxes to get a single pot and lid that match.
When nesting the pots together, it’s usually easiest to start with the largest pot, wrapping it in about 3 sheets of paper and taping the corners of the paper to one another inside the pot. Once the first pot is secure, load the second pot into the first, wrapping and taping it the same way. The third and final pot of the group should follow the same procedure.
If you have biodegradable packing peanuts, put a single layer between each pot.
When labeling the box, try following these additional guidelines:
• Mark the room on the box first, with “KITCH” for “kitchen” and a number for each box (professional packers would take care of this for you).
• Label the box on at least 2 sides (all 4 is best) and the top so you can always quickly identify what’s inside when moving and unpacking. This saves lots of time during the move.
• List the contents on the sides as well to avoid confusion later.
• Mark “Fragile” on boxes containing glass or delicate items.
• Use a dark, broad-tipped marker for labeling the boxes.
• Use block print in letters large enough to read from 6 feet away.
• Keep one single kitchen box as an “Open Me First” box containing the things you’ll want to use within 24 hours of arriving at your destination. Be sure to mark it with “Open Me First” in big red letters.

If the move has been more recent than that, then you could be setting yourself up for some significant depression.
It’s not much of a surprise as to why you might be feeling a little blue during the holiday season. Dozens of holiday songs and movies, played endlessly from Thanksgiving on, literally sing the praises of being “home” for the season. Think about it for a moment: “Home for the Holidays” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” are just two examples. And when you’re In a new place or about to move to a new place, it may not feel much like home.
Some Sources of Holiday Blues
There are a few things that can lead to having more Holiday Blues. Understanding the causes can help you find solutions. Here are some of the most common:
• Being unfamiliar in new place
• Feeling alone, potentially separated from family and friends
• Losing traditions that made you feel more festive during the Holidays
• Feeling disorganized and stressed both by the new place and the Holidays themselves

Many people are simply overwhelmed with packing, moving and unpacking responsibilities as the Holidays arrive. There can be a huge temptation to simply cancel the Holiday celebration altogether. Having some favorite Holiday music playing the background, even when you’re doing other things, can make you feel more festive. Be sure to pick CD’s that are your favorites so that they’re familiar and comforting.
Holiday Blues Buster 5: Keep In Communication With Family and Friends
Take advantage of email, webcams and the phone to check in with family and friends “early and often” throughout the Holiday Season. Ask lots of questions to keep the conversation going, request copies of emailed pictures of their celebrations and send them yours. One trick is to send out cards very early in the season, since this tends to help bring cards back into you.
Moving during the Holidays has its own unique challenges, but following these steps can make them feel more festive and help eliminate Holiday Blues.
